While it goes without saying social media is awesome for getting new visitors to come to your website, how do you get them to come back? You just keep using social media and hope that they catch another posts that peaks their interest and they click over -or- you convert them into a subscriber of your email list.
But I don’t have an email list… I don’t have time to write a newsletter… There are so many excuses why small business are not taking serious actions to build an email list but the reality of it is you are losing fans that could potentially become customers.
Now you could just head over to an email client like MailChimp create a list and place the boring widget in your sidebar and hope people see it and sign up or you could make them want to sign up. Make them feel like if they don’t sign up they will miss out on great things.
On any page of my site there are multiple opt-in forms to catch viewers get them to convert. But before you get to any content there is an opt in box that will pop up when a new user visits the site. On the every pages of this site there is an opt-in form right at the very top that scrolls with the page. There is another opt-in box in the sidebar, one below every post before you can leave comment, and one in the footer- just in case you didn’t see the others. But I don’t stop there. If you leave a comment on my site you will get a thank you email that also includes an opt-in form. Until the beginning of the year I was not taking my email list seriously.
Want to know what I did? I placed all of these opt-in forms on my site during the month of January (as in they were not even there for a full month) and do you know what happened? I more than doubled my list. This is simply amazing. I am gaining new subscribers because I have become aggressive about collecting this one piece of information. But it does help that I have a fantastic product that I am giving away.
The most positive result of getting people to subscribe to my email list is that they come back. The fact that week after week I am able to provide value to all of my readers and that they come back more means the world to me. It means that I am achieving my goals of giving back to others all of the knowledge that I have gained and relaying it in a way that they understand and relate to.
This week I will cover more in depth how to set up MailChimp and the various opt-in forms that I use and how to get your visitors to sign up and keep coming back for more of your information.
