When researching potential blog post ideas, the one area that many bloggers seem to get stuck on is finding a keyword to use. There are many ways you could go about this, but I recently discovered a free keyword research tool within Google that will help to tell you which keywords on are the rise. This method is great because it means that there is probably not a lot of competition for the keyword, but there is an increasing demand. Thus equaling higher rankings within Google searches for potential new visitors to your site.
I found using Google Trends as a way to find new related keywords to topics that I currently write about as a great way to expand on particular issues and stay relevant to a growing audience. There are plenty of free keyword research options available, as well as, some paid options that all offer excellent results. But I feel as if seeing the search rankings for current keywords and those that are on the rise is an extremely useful option. By finding keywords that have not been popular for many years and written about thousands of times, you are allowing yourself to tap a fresh market. The use of related keywords to one that you may typically use equals a broader base and a way to show Google that you know quite a bit about a certain topic and not just a singular keyword. This option also means that you are not directly competing with yourself if you have written many articles on a certain keyword previously.
Let’s use this blog post as an example. I knew that the general keyword that I would use would be “keyword research”. When I entered this into the Google Trends search option, I was able to see the popularity over time, and that it has always ranked high, this was something I expected since the keyword was vague.
Now the use of “keyword research” is an excellent option if that is what you are writing about and want readers to use to search for your article. But I find that using something that is a bit more specific has a higher click through rate. Using this method is important because it takes more than just showing up on the first page of a Google search to get new visitors and subscribers. I scrolled further down the page and found the related keyword option, and it gave options for the top related searches and rising related searches. I like to the rising options to determine a new keyword to use for blog posts. Now this does mean that it will be searched less often, but I find that can be a good thing. Because the readers searching that term are looking for something more concrete and are more likely to click through to your blog post if they find the brief description relevant.
For this blog post, one of the top rising options to use was “free keyword research”. I found this to be extremely fitting for the blog post since using Google Trends as a way to research keywords is free. There is no third party options that will let you use it and only give a few results and ask for your credit card like many of the other tools that market themselves as free keyword research tools. I find those to be extremely frustrating. And we all know that Google is the king of search engines and is the most used. So by using data they have collected to determine keywords makes this option more likely to give you results that will increase page views on your blog posts.
If you have a free keyword research tool that you love to use when researching keywords for your blog posts, I would like to hear about them.
